Facts and Figures:

First and foremost. There is no commercial production of this stone. Which means it was all hand cut. It is also hand cut because it is difficult to orient. Once a person is lucky enough to get the star on top, they usually leave it alone. So, as you might guess, calibrated stones aren't the norm.

However 4 ray stones out number 6 ray stones 500 to 1 or more. So calibrated, or nearly calibrated 4 ray stones are usually available. Calibrated 6 ray stones can be more difficult especially in the common ring size ovals. The old boys sold these off as fast as they cut them.

Having to hand craft jewelry to fit the stones was always one of star garnet's draw backs. Just like fire agate. Idaho is basically the only place left with any amount of this stone and most of the land it is on, is locked up by federal or state regulations.

We do still have and also know some of the old timers, who have quite a reserve of this material. Considering It's rarity, I also think our prices are very good. The 4 ray stones run
$7-$15ct. and the 6 ray stones $25-$75ct. Garnet is a heavy stone and has a high dome to
show the star. A couple of examples are. An 8.2mm round 4 ray 3.75ct for $40 and an 8.95mm round 6 ray 5.7ct for $142.50

If you have never seen a star garnet. Be aware, Star Garnet is not a bright red version of a Lindy Star Sapphire. 99.9% of them, pretty much look black. Until you get them in the sun light. Then you can see their deep purple color. A very few are dark red and show red in the sun. But the star is generally week. Even so, they do sell for a little more money. I don't see many of these and you pretty much have to go with what's available size wise.

For those of you who have heard of bright red Star Garnets with great stars in them. Yes I have heard of them too. But I can't say I have seen one in the 40 years I've been at this. But they are out there, in private collections and museums. They also cost more than good star rubies, if you can find one.
